'Micro-Photographs - At the meeting of the Microscopical Society, March 8th, an interesting collection of dissolving views was exhibited by the kindness of Mr. James How, of Foster Lane, by means of slides prepared by Dr. Maddox (might this be R. L. Maddox author of 'Remarks on some progressive phases of Spirillum volutans' R.M.S. 1893). The forms of some diatoms when thrown upon the screen measured over twelve feet in diameter; a section of echinus spine nine feet; a scale of a hawkmoth seven feet; and the blood discs of a newt from two to three feet long, every object being as sharp as a painting.'
On 4th December 1867 at a Conversazione organised by the Birmingham and Midland Institute at the Town Hall 'Mr. Jas. How, Foster Lane, London' shared Table No. 1 on the Ground Floor with 'Mr. Baker, High Holborn' for the display of Microscopes. Also a display in the Gallery of a 'Collection of Chemical Apparatus'.
