An Illustrated Watson Catalogue
Frontispiece
This project is as a direct result of being presented with a couple of Watson items that were not immediately recognisable as being of genuine Watson manufacture.
One such piece is the vertical illuminator with a simple metal plate into which two holes of differing diameters have been drilled. Unusually for Watson, this, at first glance, appears to be a rather amateur attempt to reduce the beam of light entering the illuminator.
By consulting the catalogue it is clear that this plate was provided as an option on the accessory and in fact is of the usual high finish associated with Watson products.
A number of people over the years have asked us to identify various accessories and confirm their origin.
It seems about the right time to produce a copy of a Watson catalogue that is augmented by photographs of the actual instruments themselves. As far as we are aware this has not been done before for any of the multifarious manufacturers. If the project proves a success then we will, in all probability, produce similar CDs relating to those other Instrument Makers, but always with the microscope as the central theme.
Each page of the 1921 Twenty Eighth Edition of Parts 1 & 2 of the Microscope and Accessories catalogue is reproduced here. An item, textual or line drawing, where the mouse pointer becomes a hand indicates a link to a photograph depicting that item.
Where possible we have taken the photograph from a similar viewpoint as that adopted by the artist when executing the drawings. In some cases extra detail is shown. For example, the objectives are shown with their canisters.
