Bacteria are among the smallest and most basic life forms. But there are also big forms like the spherical colony of cyanobacteria Nostoc. Other cyanobacteria like Merismopedia have very regular plate-like colonies. Most bacteria (like the spirochaetes on the left and the bacilli in the center are so small they are only visible with high power microscopes.
