The image is of a black circle at position 'a' on the layout. The duller black peripheral ring drawn by compass can be seen, and this is also distinguishable by incomplete filling in with ink of a different intensity of black.

A ringing table was clearly not used. The pin holes of the compass are mostly blocked by ink but some are visible so a stencil was not used either.

This method was really predictable considering that Henry F. Hailes 1827-1892 was a draftsman by profession.
