This photograph is to show the leaves and sepals. The sepals are the leaf-like structures right underneath the petals, they are often confused for the leaves. The sepals are responsible for protecting the flower. Further along the stem are the leaves which help bring nutrients and water to the main part of the flower.

This image shows the flower not fully opened.
As you can see the petals surround the reproductive parts for protection and with enough sunlight and water, the petals will open.
