Licmophora flabellata is a sessile colony of pennate diatoms that lives attached to seaweeds such as red algae. Pennate diatoms, the elongated ones with bilateral symmetry, mostly live a benthic or sessile (attached) life while the centric diatoms are mostly planktonic.
