City Airport, by comparison, is small (even cosy) with a single runway right in the heart of a modern business and community development area, called Docklands, in East London. Being the closest to the heart of London, it is the most convenient one for access to London hotels and for quick connection to the hub of the UK's transport infrastructure.
London Stansted Airport is just over 30 miles north-east of London,
5 minutes drive-time from junction 8 on the M11. A rail link provides
access to the City, with a journey time of 41 minutes.
Heathrow Airport lies to the West of London. Roads leading away from Heathrow are congested and busy at all times but the recent opening of a subway station now provides for a rapid means of getting from the airport into central London via the underground train network.
Gatwick Airport is approx. 20 miles South of London in a comparatively 'rural' area. Roads to and from Gatwick are normally fairly good to use with traffic build-ups occurring only at peak times during the day. An excellent 24 hour rail-link is provided into London which takes approx. 35 minutes.
If you intend to hire a car for your own use and pick it up from the
airport, remember that the UK motorist drives on the left-hand
side of the road and petrol (gasoline) is approx. 2.80 UK pounds per gallon
(4.5 litres) - JAN 1999. Small parties arriving at one of the London Airports
and traveling to London or Southern, Western, or Eastern UK destinations,
might prefer to hire a chauffeur
driven car to take them safely to their point of call. Parties going
