One of most interesting walks along the bank of the River Thames is from Blackfriars Bridge, going East, towards the new Docklands complex. The walk is marked on the map below. Catch a tube to Blackfriars station, head towards the river and cross over to the southern bank by walking over Blackfriars bridge. Behind you, the dome roof of St. Paul's Cathedral dominates the skyline.

Go down the steps at the end of the pier and walk along the river bank towards Southwark Bridge. You will encounter the Globe Theatre just before Southwark Bridge (marked 3 on  map). This reconstruction of Shakespeare's original playhouse is well worth a stop. Carry on walking, beneath Southwark bridge and towards London Bridge. The next place of interest is The Clink Prison, one of the oldest prisons in England. You can take a look around this creepy place before walking on to look at the Golden Hinde ship - a bit further up.

Find your way past Southwark Cathedral - (marked 4 on the map) and follow the signs for the riverside walk. You will need to come up the stairs at London Bridge and cross some busy roads to pick up the walk again. Aim to get onto the bridge itself and find the stairs across the road back down to the river bank. You might care to take a break here at London Bridge for a meal or snack before continuing... or even visit the London Dungeon (marked 5 on the map); this is the scariest place in London.

Further along the river, you will pass HMS Belfast, which is open to the public and worth a visit too. Ahead of you lies the magnificent Tower Bridge. Stop off here and take part in the Tower Bridge Experience or cross over to the Tower of London (marked 6 on the map) before taking the final stretch up the the Design Museum (marked 7). This final part of your walk takes you past some very old wharfs and buildings up to St. Saviours dock... a very atmospheric part of London now being redeveloped as a very desirable place to live. Just take a look at the cost of a one bedroom flat in this area!

Other major places of interest on this map are: (0) St. Paul's Cathedral, (1) Houses of Parliament.

Reserve a good long afternoon for your walk because there really is a lot to see with some curious and very London sights along the way.
