A very good Tip! If you want to eat cheaply
yet still eat good food, eat when the Londoner working population eat:
between 12.00 mid-day and 2.00 pm. Many restaurants compete for this market
and offer Pizzas, buffet lunches, or special offers at knockdown prices
to win regular customers. Take a look at pizza houses around the West-end
and City and watch out for notice boards outside or in the restaurant windows
advertising cheaper meals. In London, if you look around, you should always
be able to eat in a restaurant at dinner time for as low as 5.00 pounds
per head!
Watch out for paying over the odds for meals in museums and places of interest. If you want to eat, go to a street restaurant. Go to museums and galleries to look at the stuff there - not eat!
Covent Garden, on a summer's evening, can be an
atmospheric place to dine. A variety of foods are on offer and many tourists
and Londoners dine out for an evening here.
Vegetarians are supported at most restaurants with many specialising in vegatarian-only cooking.
If you would like to eat whilst having a view over London - take a trip to Blackfriars Bridge (See map) and along the south side river bank, you will se the OXO tower (it says 'OXO' high up on the side of the building). It isn't cheap but boy... what a view!
Main street cafe's often adopt a more continental style with tables outside on the street. A list of restaurants here would prove futile as there are thousands of places to eat and to recommend one from another would mean we would have to try them all. Instead, I will try to give you an idea of what to expect to pay as an average price in UK pounds and pence for a quality meal or food item. This would be a cost that Londoners would expect to pay:-
Cup of Coffee
From coffee house: 1.20 pounds small, 2.00 medium.
From Street cafe: 0.80 pence
Chinese Meal without drinks
Non-buffet: 10.00 to 15.00 pounds per head
Buffet: 5.00 - 8.00 pounds per head.

From road-side van: small cone: 0.85 p large cone: 1.40 pence
From a shop: 1.20 pence.

A pint of beer or lager from a public house: : 2.25 pounds
A 440 ml can of beer from an off-licence: 0.80 to 1.20 pounds
A Pub Meal
Public Houses in London are a good source of home-cooked food. Most
are good value for money.
Try them and aim at pubs where meal prices fall in the range
3.50 to 6.00 pounds.

pound a bottle.
