As London is the transport centre of the UK, it is worth considering trips a bit further afield, especially if this is your first visit to England. Few people realise that the seaside or south coast is only 60 miles away - BRIGHTON - and can be reached by train from London in just over an hour or so. Trains run from KINGS CROSS station, but you can also intercept them from Thameslink City and Blackfriars station. Brighton is often called 'Little London' because it has a lively atmosphere and is one of the most popular seaside haunts for South-Londoners.
If you want to shop cheaper than London prices, use the same rail link and go to Croydon in South Greater London. Buy a ticket to Croydon East station and when you get out the station ask someone to direct you to theWhitgift Centre. This is a large shopping precinct which supports the presence of most of the UK shopping chain stores. Croydon is about 40 minutes away by train !
The Imperial War Museum lies close to Kennington Tube and Waterloo Stations. it is one of the most comprehensive war museums in the world so if you are interested in how life was during the first or second world wars, this is the place to go!
If you adore plants, take a trip to Qew Gardens near Chiswick. You get their by catching a tube to Kew Gardens station on the District Line, from The Embankment station, 2 stops down (south) on the Northern Tube line from Leicester Square station. If you like opera or cinema, the National Film Theatre, Royal Festival Hall, and the Museum of the Moving Image are only a stone's throw away on the Southbank of the River Thames just the other side of Waterloo Bridge.
London has some fine parks: Regents Park - complete with Zoo, Hyde Park, and St. James Park are all worth a stroll.
One of the most interesting places outside of London, but reachable for a day out, is Chislehurst caves in Chislehurst. Few tourists to London have heard of this place but it probably one of the most interesting places you can go. Chislehurst caves extend for miles underground and were used by the Druids 2000 years ago for human sacrifice, by the Romans, and during the second world war. Guided Tours will take you around the most interesting bits without you getting lost!
My recommendation to you in composing this page and on behalf of Onview.net Ltd is give it a try - you will experience something few tourists have seen. It is my most favourite place in South England - so much so that as a Londoner, I go there most years. We are not making any money here by recommending this place so please see this as a gift from a Londoner who has lived here for 48 years :))
Here is there phone number - dial this once you are in London: 0181 467 3264. Prices of Tours 3.00 to 5.00 pounds per head - short tour / long tour! You get to Chilsehurst by rail to Chislehurst station. London Travel Information for train connections: 0171 222 1234 but as it always busy - ring the caves and ask them how you get there from London!!
Other places worth a visit and close enough to
reach and have time to enjoy from London:-
For a special treat but only if
you can afford it, we have negotiated with a London business - a one day
outing of a lifetime. If you can organise a party of 5 to 7 people willing
to take this offer from the same London hotel or even from a London Airport,
you can travel to STONEHENGE - the most enigmatic monument in the
western world and be returned safely and in luxury to your point of departure
(a London airport or a London Hotel) for between 75 to 100 UK pounds per
head (depends on number in party!).
Every century and decade, new theories abound for the purpose and reason of this stone circle... from the mystical to the scientific... from sexual overtures to dark religious practices, but no-one knows the meaning of the stones for certain! As mysterious and unsolved a puzzle as the Egyptian pyramids, Stonehenge represents a monumental achievement by a race long ago. Out on desolate plains, they stand as a challenge to the mind and spirit of humankind... some folks say they throb with a life-force of their own... or is just in the mind of the beholder? Now is your chance to find out for yourself!

Travel in a luxury car - stretch limo or similar - with a friendly London Chauffeur as your driver, and cheerful guide. Tour the Stonehenge Site and take those photographs and videos which will be the envy of your friends. Stop off on route at a country pub for a ploughmans lunch or country pub meal and a glass of real ale, then slip back into the relaxing interior of a world-class car for the rest of your journey.
