The large rounded area is a mature Graafian Follicle-{A}, developed from a primary follicle-{D} after puberty in humans. Hormones trigger Primary Oocytes, (suspended during prophase of meiosis since birth), to complete the first division of meiosis. Secondary Oocytes-{B} are formed along with polar bodies; the latter are of no use and are lost from the ... Graafian follicle. The secondary oocyte is haploid but cannot complete meiosis until fertilised. Oestrogen, a hormone responsible for preparing the womb for egg-fertilisation, is released from cells here-{C}. The Graafian follicle will fuse with the germinal epithelium-{E} releasing the secondary oocyte (egg) into the oviduct to travel to the womb. |
