Sexual reproduction in Desmids

 


D
esmids occur in several genera that can look rather different but with a common way of sexual propagation.

Here two cells are coming together in a process that is called conjugation and then form a zygote between the cells. In this image you can see the empty 'textured' cell wall of the Cosmarium.

It is not at all easy to see this process in free nature.
