Micrasterias thomasiana

Cosmarium, Staurastrum, Closterium, Xanthidium, Euastrum, Micrasterias
; the names of the genera are almost as beautiful as the algae themselves. Micrasterias is especially spectacular for the microscopist. A beautiful form, nice flat cells, easy to photograph and often in the process of division.

The following pages will show you the cell division. This process starts in the light area in the center of the organism where the nucleus is situated.
