The piece of cloth from Van's underwear was crawling alive with lice. It had been a year ago since we had become infested with Super-resistant hair-lice but now, here, before me - were hundreds of them.

Yet, from memory, these seemed so much more aggressive and active than any I had seen before. Mol turned to me:  "If she has any on her body, the bath will not have killed them", he said. His eyes showed deep concern. "You'd better go and check, Larry, while I take a look through the rest of her clothes".

Vanessa was still out for the count as I gently slipped back the sheets. She was burning up with fever. As I scanned her skin with my 8x magnifier, the heat coming from her body was a tangible thing. It was like putting your hand over a flame!

I was beginning to think she was clean of lice until I remembered how they needed hair to cling to. Vanessa has almost perfect skin with very fine wisps of hair,  except for under her arms, her head, and...

Damn! Her pubic hair was crawling with the little bleeders! I could see them, clear as daylight, scrabbling excitely over each other in a race to get to the best feeding spots. Some were big. I could see them even without the magnifier - pumped up - gorged on her blood!

I cut some of her hair from all four places where hair was abundant and took them into Mol at the microscope.

He knew from the expression on my face what I had found.

"How is she?", he asked. "Is her temperature still high?"
I nodded as I gave him the hair samples.

"We should call a Doctor, Larry. Maybe she's got something more serious than a few hair lice, especially if she's been sleeping rough these last few nights?"

Sure, I was worried sick but me and Van rarely got involved with the system. We prefer to sort out our own problems. Mol knew this.

"Let's see how she is in the morning", I told him, as we proceeded to look at the samples under the scope.

We didn't know what we were looking for. I guess we were just driven on by our natural curiousity and our passion and understanding that if you want to solve a problem, any problem, get out your microscope and look at the issues close-up!

"Larry. There's something else here!" Mol exclaimed.

I bent over the scope to take a look!
