Dave Walker is an amateur naturalist living in England. He has a particular fascination for the 'miniature world' around us, both natural and man-made. 
Micscape magazine is the monthly e-zine of Microscopy-UK.

Left: The simplest objects become attractive with the right lighting - the plastic gauze from a 'Band Aid' or 'Elastoplast' under polarised light
Various tips
Right: Vitamin C tablets dissolved in water and recrystallised on a microscope slide, viewed in polarised light
  • Topical tips 1 - containers, insect manipulator, pond and stream nets
  • Topical tips 2 - filters, lamps etc
  • Topical tips 3 - using an A4 flatbed scanner to image prepared microscope slides etc.
  • Topical tips 8 - measuring the eyepoint of a microscope eyepiece; useful if it's to be used with a digicam.
